Yes. Inguinal hernia can recur after surgery, though it’s not common, the possibility is there. As per a study, around 5 out of 100 people develop another inguinal hernia after having surgery. If an inguinal hernia recurs the next day after surgery, it is possible to have surgery again with precautions.
Surgery without synthetic mesh is more prone to hernia recurrence. The risk of having another hernia depends on the surgical procedure, and it varies from person to person. Most of the time patients get swelling after surgery, so doctors recommend them to wait for a couple of weeks. If the swelling does not settle down in a couple of weeks, your doctor has to perform another surgery. At this moment, patients may take a second opinion.
If the first surgery was laparoscopic, the second one can be an open surgery with mesh. While if it was open surgery, your doctor may perform laparoscopy next time. The risk of pain and wound infections is lower in this treatment.
