Understanding the Anatomy of Your Tongue

Understanding the anatomy of your tongue involves recognizing its various structures and functions.

  • Muscles: The tongue consists of intrinsic and extrinsic muscles. Intrinsic muscles control the shape and size of the tongue, whereas extrinsic muscles help in movement.
  • Papillae: These are small structures that cover the surface of the tongue and contain the taste buds. There are four types of papillae, including filiform, fungiform, foliate, and circumvallate papillae.
  • Taste buds: These sensory organs are located in the papillae and have the function of detecting various tastes.
  • Saliva glands: The tongue contains numerous salivary glands that produce saliva. It aids in digestion, lubricates food, and helps maintain oral health
  • Blood Supply and Innervation: The tongue receives blood supply from branches of the lingual artery and is innervated by multiple cranial nerves, including the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) for motor function and the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) for taste sensation.

Being familiar with these aspects of tongue anatomy can help people take better care of their oral health and identify any potential abnormalities that might require the attention of a medical professional.

Different Types of Tongue Tie Release Surgery

Types of Surgery

Description

Frenotomy

This surgery involves an incision or laser cut in the lingual frenulum to release the tongue tie.

Frenuloplasty

Frenuloplasty is a surgical procedure in which the frenulum is altered releasing the tongue tie.

Lingual frenuloplasty

Similar to frenuloplasty, but focuses specifically on the lingual frenulum. It might involve reshaping the frenulum to improve tongue mobility and function.

Functional frenuloplasty

Involves precise incisions in the lingual frenulum to release tension and improve tongue mobility.

Surgery for a tongue tie is intended to help overcome the limitations that can occur. The specifics may vary depending on how severe the condition is, the age of the patient, and the individual. It is important to speak to a healthcare provider as each specific case is unique and the best course of treatment can be determined together.

How Does a Tongue Tie Release Surgery Work?

Before Surgery

  • Evaluation: A healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician, dentist, or an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, examines the patient, who is generally an infant or child, to find out if they have a tongue tie and whether surgery is required.
  • Consultation: The healthcare professional will outline the surgery to the patient or patient’s caregiver, explaining the likely results, possible risks, potential complications, and the duration of the procedure.
  • Medical history: A thorough review of the patient's past medical history including comorbid medical conditions and current medications or supplements will be carried out.

During Surgery

  • Anesthesia: The type of anesthesia used for the procedure will depend on the patient's age and the severity of the tongue tie. Local anesthesia will numb the region around the tongue tie, while general anesthesia will render the patient unconscious.
  • Incision or laser: Depending on the severity of the tongue tie, the surgeon may remove a portion of the frenulum or make a small cut to release it.
  • Closure: The incision site may be left open or closed with sutures, depending on the surgeon's preference and the extent of the procedure.

After Surgery (Recovery and Outlook)

  • Recovery: Once the surgery is over, the patient is moved to a recovery area where they can be watched until they wake up from anesthesia and are stable.
  • Pain management: The doctor will prescribe pain medications to manage any pain or discomfort after the procedure.
  • Postoperative care: Patients may be advised to stick to a soft diet for a few days to allow the surgical site to heal. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to prevent infection. Patients may be instructed to rinse their mouth with salt water or a prescribed mouthwash.
  • Follow-up: Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure the anticipated improvement in tongue function. Additional measures such as speech therapy or further surgical procedures may be recommended if appropriate.
